Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how SlitherID (“we,” “our,” or “the App”) handles your information.

We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy describes what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your information.

Information We DO NOT Collect

SlitherID does not require user accounts and does not collect or store:

  • Email addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Names
  • Passwords
  • Any other personally identifiable information

Information We Do Collect

1. Photos You Submit

  • When you take or upload a photo of a snake for identification, the photo is processed to identify the species
  • Photos are stored locally on your device along with identification results
  • Photos are transmitted securely to OpenAI’s API via our secure intermediary service (val.town) for analysis
  • We do not store your photos on our servers or any cloud storage
  • Photos sent to OpenAI are subject to OpenAI’s data usage policies, and OpenAI cannot use data gathered via our app to train their models

2. Device Permissions

  • Camera Access: Required when you want to take a photo of a snake directly within the app
  • Photo Library Access: Required when you want to upload an existing photo from your device
  • These permissions are only used for their stated purposes

3. Usage Analytics

  • We may use UXCam to collect anonymous session recordings to understand how users interact with the app and improve user experience
  • This may include screen recordings, taps, gestures, and navigation patterns without any user identifiable information
  • UXCam may collect device information and app usage data according to their privacy policy

4. Subscription and Payment Information

  • We use RevenueCat to manage in-app subscriptions
  • RevenueCat may collect transaction data, device identifiers, and other information necessary to process payments
  • We do not have access to your actual payment information (credit card numbers, etc.) as this is handled directly by Apple
  • RevenueCat’s data collection and use is governed by their privacy policy

5. Future Analytics and Services

  • We may integrate additional analytics and services such as Firebase, AppsFlyer, or similar tools in the future
  • These services may collect usage data, device information, and app performance metrics
  • Each service will have its own privacy policy governing their data practices
  • We will update this Privacy Policy when such integrations are added

How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information to:

  • Identify snake species from photos you submit
  • Provide you with identification results
  • Improve app functionality and user experience
  • Process subscription payments
  • Analyze app usage patterns to enhance features
  • Provide customer support when needed

Data Storage and Security

  • All photos and identification results are stored locally on your device only
  • We implement reasonable security measures to protect data transmitted to third-party services
  • Photos are transmitted securely via encrypted connections
  • We do not maintain any server-side database of your photos or identification history

Data Retention

  • Photos and identification results are stored on your device until you delete them
  • If you delete the app, all locally stored data is removed from your device
  • We do not retain any copies of your photos or identification history
  • Third-party services may retain data according to their own retention policies

Children’s Privacy

SlitherID is rated 4+ and can be used by children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since we do not collect personally identifiable information from any users, we do not have special procedures for children.

Parents and guardians should supervise children’s use of the app, particularly when dealing with potentially dangerous wildlife.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:

  • Right to Access: Since all your data is stored locally on your device, you have direct access to it
  • Right to Delete: You can delete your photos and identification history directly from the app or by uninstalling the app
  • Right to Object: You can choose not to use the app if you disagree with our data practices
  • Right to Withdraw Consent: You can revoke camera and photo library permissions in your device settings

For data collected by third-party services, please contact them directly or refer to their privacy policies.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. We will notify users of any material changes by:

  • Updating the “Last Updated” date at the top of this policy

We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.

Data Breach Notification

In the unlikely event of a data breach affecting your information, we will notify affected users as required by applicable law. However, since we do not store your photos or personal information on our servers, the risk of such a breach is minimal.
